It seems like every few days we have a new AI tool drop from the sky. This week, it was Microsoft bringing out their SLM “Phi-2” and resetting how the world thinks of these Language Models. In other news, Elon launched Grok live onto X. From there we get into the Pope wanting to regulate AI, Financial Doom and Gloom theories and learn that AI is being used for targeting in war.

Jeremy Howard is an entrepreneur, developer, business strategist and educator. He is well known as the founding researcher at fast.ai and a Distinguished Research Scientist at the University of San Francisco.  He was previously the founder and CEO of Enlitic, the first company to apply deep learning to the field of medicine. Its success made it to MIT Tech Review’s world’s top 50 smartest companies for two years in a row. 

Microsoft has unveiled its latest AI model, Phi-2, a 2.7 billion-parameter language model that sets a new standard in the realm of base language models. Phi-2 is a testament to Microsoft's commitment to advancing AI technology, building upon the success of its predecessors, Phi-1 and Phi-1.5. This model stands out for its outstanding reasoning and language understanding capabilities, challenging the notion that larger models are inherently superior. Phi-2's ability to match or surpass models up to 25 times its size is a significant achievement, demonstrating the power of innovations in model scaling and training data curation.

Phi-2's compact size belies its immense capabilities, making it an ideal platform for researchers to explore various aspects of AI, including mechanistic interpretability, safety improvements, and fine-tuning experimentation. Two key aspects underpin Phi-2's achievements:

Phi-2 has undergone rigorous evaluation across various benchmarks, including Big Bench Hard, commonsense reasoning, language understanding, math, and coding. Despite having only 2.7 billion parameters, Phi-2 outperforms larger models like Mistral and Llama-2 and matches or outperforms Google’s recently-announced Gemini Nano 2. Beyond benchmarks, Phi-2 demonstrates its capabilities in real-world scenarios, such as solving physics problems and correcting student mistakes, showcasing its versatility beyond standard evaluations. Phi-2 is a Transformer-based model with a next-word prediction objective, trained on 1.4 trillion tokens from synthetic and web datasets. The training process, conducted on 96 A100 GPUs over 14 days, focuses on maintaining a high level of safety and claims to surpass open-source models in terms of toxicity and bias.

Microsoft's unveiling of Phi-2 marks a significant milestone in the AI industry. This model not only showcases Microsoft's prowess in AI development but also highlights the evolving landscape of AI technology, where efficiency, quality of training data, and ethical considerations are becoming increasingly important. Phi-2's achievements in benchmarking and real-world applications set a new standard for what smaller base language models can achieve, paving the way for more efficient, ethical, and powerful AI systems in the future.

Grok, a new AI chatbot developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup, has officially launched on X (formerly known as Twitter). This ChatGPT competitor began rolling out to X Premium Plus subscribers in the U.S., offering a unique take on AI-powered bots. Unlike its counterparts like ChatGPT and Google's Bard, Grok is distinguished by its 'rebellious' streak, adding a new dimension to the AI chatbot landscape.

Grok operates on a generative model called Grok-1, trained on data from the web up to Q3 2023 and feedback from human assistants. What sets Grok apart is its ability to incorporate real-time data from posts on X into its responses, providing up-to-the-minute information. This feature positions Grok as a potentially more dynamic and responsive chatbot compared to its contemporaries.

Grok's distinct personality, as described by Musk, includes a bit of wit and a willingness to answer more 'spicy' questions that other AI systems typically reject. This approach is evident in Grok's interactions, where it can engage in more colloquial, first-person responses and even indulge in profanity and colorful language upon request. This edgy personality is a stark contrast to the more conservative nature of other chatbots like Bard and ChatGPT.

Grok is currently integrated into the X side menu on the web, iOS, and Android, and can be added to the bottom menu in X’s mobile apps for quicker access. While it is currently text-only, xAI plans to enhance the underlying model to handle video, audio, and other modalities. This expansion could further Grok's capabilities and applications.

As advertisers pull away from X amid various controversies, Musk's focus on subscriptions and making them more attractive is evident with the introduction of Grok. This strategy aims to generate revenue through subscriptions by offering unique services like Grok, potentially gated behind a paywall. Grok's launch is part of a broader plan to introduce a range of new services on X.

The introduction of Grok by xAI and X marks a notable development in the AI chatbot industry. Grok's unique features, particularly its real-time data integration and 'rebellious' personality, offer a fresh perspective on AI interactions. As the AI chatbot landscape continues to evolve, Grok's presence could inspire new innovations and approaches, potentially reshaping how we perceive and interact with AI chatbots.
