AI in Education: The AI talk you need to have with your kids

As we navigate the digital age, it is crucial to equip our children with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. One area that's becoming increasingly important to educate our children on is Artificial Intelligence. The digital landscape is changing rapidly, and AI is at the forefront of this transformation. It is not just a tech buzzword anymore; it is a reality that our children will live with. The sooner we start educating them, the better prepared they'll be for the future.

The New Literacy: Understanding AI

AI is no longer a subject reserved for tech enthusiasts or computer science majors. It is becoming a basic form of literacy and traditional literacy is no longer enough. Just as we teach children to read and write, we should also be teaching them the basics of AI. Regina Barzilay, a professor at MIT, argues that understanding the fundamentals of AI should be something every high school graduate knows. Schools are even exploring ways to use AI systems to teach kids important lessons on critical thinking.

The Ethical Side of AI in Education

One of the challenges that educators face is identifying when students use AI to complete their assignments. Ethics in AI is a gray area that we're all still navigating. Schools need to be proactive in setting guidelines and educating both teachers and students on the ethical use of AI. While there are tools that claim to detect AI-generated text, they are often unreliable. It is crucial for parents to familiarize themselves with their child's school's AI policies and ensure their kids abide by them, but also to allow their kids to use AI to enhance their educational journey, not take the journey for them.

The Double-Edged Sword: Risks and Rewards of AI

While AI can be a fantastic tool for learning, it also comes with its own set of risks, such as data privacy concerns and the potential for misinformation. Parents and educators need to strike a balance between leveraging the benefits of AI and mitigating its risks. AI is a tool, and like any tool, it can be used for good or bad. It is essential to have open discussions about the potential pitfalls, such as data security and the spread of misinformation, so that we can use AI responsibly, especially when it comes to young minds.

AI is here to stay, and it is increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives and our children's education. As responsible parents and educators, it is our duty to ensure that our kids are well-equipped to navigate this new landscape. Let's take the first step by having open and honest conversations about AI with our children.

How do we deal with Students using AI for College Admission Essays?

Georgia Tech has taken a proactive approach to the use of AI in college admissions essays. The university has issued guidelines that allow applicants to use AI chatbots like ChatGPT for brainstorming and organizing their thoughts. However, they draw a line at directly copying and pasting AI-generated paragraphs into the application. According to Rick Clark, Georgia Tech’s executive director of undergraduate admission, the university aims to provide "guardrails" for students who are already using AI in their academic work. This approach acknowledges the utility of AI in the brainstorming process while maintaining the integrity of the admissions process. It's a pragmatic way to integrate technology into education without compromising academic honesty.

On the other hand, many educational institutions have not yet addressed the issue, leading to what Clark describes as a "deafening silence." The lack of a standardized approach across educational institutions could lead to confusion among applicants. It's crucial for the academic community to come together and establish common guidelines to ensure fairness and clarity. The University of Georgia advises applicants to treat AI like any other form of assistance, such as help from a parent or counselor. Oglethorpe University, on the other hand, acknowledges AI as a "powerful and convenient" tool but emphasizes that the final writing should reflect the applicant's own thoughts and personality.

A recent survey reveals that about one in ten high school seniors and incoming college freshmen have used or are likely to use AI tools like ChatGPT for their college application essays. Interestingly, nearly all of these students acknowledged that the AI-generated text needed substantial editing to meet their needs. The fact that students find AI-generated text in need of substantial editing suggests that AI is not yet a substitute for human input, especially for tasks requiring emotional intelligence and nuance.

While some argue that AI-generated essays lack the emotional depth and nuance that human-written essays possess, others see AI as a tool that students need to learn how to use appropriately.

There is potential for AI to level the playing field in college admissions, especially for students who may not have access to college coaching or other forms of assistance. However, it also raises questions about the fairness and authenticity of using AI-generated content in an application process designed to assess individual merit. Georgia Tech is exploring the use of AI in its own admissions process to compare program scores against human evaluators. This is an intriguing development. If universities start using AI in their evaluation process, it could revolutionize admissions. However, it also opens up a new set of ethical and practical questions that need to be addressed.
